The color BROWN. My love of brown is a huge reason I dove deeper into fountain pens, especially my desire to ALWAYS be equipped with brown ink. So be ye not surprised I love this video “The Best Brown Pens – According to Drew Brown” asking whether brown fountain pens are under-appreciated:
Sure, it’s at-least partly a punny play on the guy’s name, but he definitely does a convincing (and entertaining) job of showcasing brown fountain pens with oodles of love.
I agree that gold-tone accents are much better on brown pens than silver-toned. I’m also glad he featured see-through amber in with/as a kind of brown in the shape of the Pilot Custom 823. I loved the Lamy AL-star in Marron making the cut because it’s been on my wishlist for a long time but I’ve never seen anyone talk about it before even though it seems like such a special color and finish. But I’m especially fond of him starting out with the glow-in-the-dark over-the-top glittery BENU Briolette in Luminous Amber. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the world needs more brown glitter, and EVEN BETTER if it reminds me of a root beer float.
Drew is delightful to watch and listen to, and it makes me super happy to see someone giving props to brown without being stuffy about it as purely a color to be loved for its “classic” un-glitzy country club masculine associations with tobacco and leather and bourbon rolled up in yet another boring cigar-shape. I love that this guy expresses unabashed enthusiastic genuine joyful pleasure in yummy colors and pen designs … and he’s punny. It makes me trust his recommendations more than ones coming from less-ebullient fountain pen people who a lot of times seem more caught up in being high-brow and other less-fun facets of collecting.
Drew Brown of The Goulet Pen Company shares delightful nerdy geeky enthusiasm for fountain pen factoids and the color brown in their YouTube videos
Such a compelling and enjoyable video I didn’t even notice that he doesn’t have any of the pens he mentions physically with him to fiddle with and show off in the vlog (at least, not that I can find); I would not have realized he wasn’t in the tactile presence of the pens he speaks of if I hadn’t scanned back through the video trying to find a good image for a thumbnail for this blog entry.
